JEKYLL & HYDE
Musical in zwei Akten von Frank Wildhorn
Für die Bühne adaptiert von Steve Cuden und Frank Wildhorn
Buch und Liedtexte von Leslie Bricusse
Deutsche Übersetzung von Susanne Dengler und Eberhard Storz
In deutscher Sprache

English Summary
Act I
Dr. Henry Jekyll, a London physician, investigates the duality of good and evil within the human spirit. He sets out to banish all evil. John Utterson, his friend, and Sir Danvers Carew, the father of his fiancée, Lisa, support his endeavor. Everyone else, however, is sceptical of Jekyll’s research project. Jekyll asks the board of St. Jude’s Hospital for permission to test his research on human subjects, but is rejected. Increasingly obsessed, Jekyll throws himself into his experiments, neglecting everything else – he even arrives late for his own engagement party. Later that night, Jekyll and Utterson end up at “The Red Rat”, where Jekyll meets Lucy, a prostitute. Fascinated by the woman, he offers to help her, should she ever find herself in distress. In a radical move, Jekyll tests the substance on himself and transforms into Edward Hyde – his monstrous alter ego – who stalks the streets of London by night. Shortly thereafter, a distraught Lucy visits Jekyll at his home, recounting with horror her encounter with a murderous new client named Hyde. Jekyll comes to recognize his own dark side.
Act II
Members of London’s high society are being killed. Who is the murderer? Jekyll’s character has been changed by his experiments. During a visit to the laboratory, he berates his fiancée, Lisa. Jekyll can no longer control his transformations, and his experiment is spiraling out of control. When his friend Utterson confronts him in the laboratory, he witnesses the transformation from Hyde back to Jekyll. Jekyll wants to send Lucy to the countryside to protect her, but she refuses, and becomes Hyde’s next victim. The struggle between Jekyll and Hyde, between good and evil, becomes increasingly fraught. If one is destroyed, the other must die as well. During his wedding to Lisa, Jekyll transforms into Hyde in front of all the guests and lunges at his bride. He attempts to bring the situation under control, and in a final moment of clarity, Jekyll begs for his own death. His wish is granted.
